Pulmonary Function Testing
Pulmonary Function Testing, or PFT, is a non-invasive breathing test that measures how well your lungs are working. These tests help evaluate airflow, lung volume, and the efficiency with which your lungs move oxygen into your bloodstream.
Why Your Provider May Order a PFT
Pulmonary Function Testing may be recommended if you are experiencing:
- Shortness of breath
- Chronic cough
- Wheezing
- Chest tightness
- Asthma or COPD symptoms
- Changes in breathing after illness
- Need for lung monitoring before surgery or during treatment
PFTs can help diagnose and monitor lung conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary fibrosis, and other respiratory concerns.
What to Expect
During the test, you will breathe into a mouthpiece connected to specialized equipment. You may be asked to take deep breaths, blow out as hard and fast as you can, or repeat breathing exercises several times to ensure accurate results. A soft nose clip may be used so that all breathing is measured through your mouth.
Testing is generally safe and painless, though some patients may briefly feel lightheaded or short of breath during the breathing exercises.
How to Prepare
Your provider will give you specific instructions. General preparation may include:
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Avoid smoking before the test.
- Avoid heavy meals before your appointment.
- Ask your provider whether you should use inhalers or breathing medications before testing.
- Follow any additional instructions from your care team.
Results
Your results will be reviewed and shared with your ordering provider. They will discuss what the results mean and whether any additional testing, treatment, or follow-up care is needed.
