Serving with Heart: Katie Lowry Helps Patients Heal and Transition Home Through Swing Bed Care.
Katie Lowry, RN
Assistant Director of Nursing & Swing Bed Coordinator
At Girard Medical Center, exceptional patient care begins with dedicated professionals who serve both with skill and heart. One of those professionals is Katie Lowery, RN, who serves as the Assistant Director of Nursing and Swing Bed Coordinator, playing a vital role in patient recovery and transition of care.
Katie has been part of the Girard Medical Center team for three years, beginning as a PRN nurse and moving into a full-time role in September. She grew up in Liberal, Missouri, and values the close-knit nature of rural communities—something that strongly influences her passion for healthcare.
Outside of work, Katie enjoys spending time with her family and their dog, Mack. Whether she’s helping her dad on the ranch, relaxing at the family lake with her mom and stepdad, or making memories with her husband and children, family time is at the heart of what she loves most.
Katie works in the Swing Bed Department, which provides transitional care for patients recovering from acute illness. As the Swing Bed Coordinator, she helps patients and families navigate the transition from hospital care to a safe discharge and improved quality of life. This includes coordinating home health services, skilled nursing placements, medical equipment, and post-discharge follow-up care, as well as obtaining insurance authorizations and collaborating with the interdisciplinary care team.
In addition to her coordination and administrative responsibilities, Katie supports the Director of Nursing with scheduling, staff education, and operational needs. She also steps in to provide clinical nursing coverage across multiple areas—including the ER, inpatient medical-surgical unit, ICU, and surgery—whenever additional support is needed.
What Katie enjoys most about her department is being part of a nursing team that truly strives to provide the highest quality patient care possible. She takes great pride in the Swing Bed Program, which offers patients a supportive environment to heal and transition smoothly back home.
One of Katie’s proudest moments at Girard Medical Center is seeing patients recover and return home, a reminder of the meaningful impact her work has every day. Serving a rural community is especially important to her, as she understands how valuable it is to receive care from someone you know and trust.
Through her role, Katie has built strong relationships within the community by supporting patients and families during some of life’s most challenging moments—and celebrating their successes along the way. Her message to the community is simple but powerful:
“We are caregivers from your community helping you heal in your community and get back to your community.”
