At Girard Medical Center, healthcare is personal. Through its Our Roots. Our People. initiative, GMC is highlighting the departments and caregivers who are deeply rooted in the communities they serve. One of those essential teams is the Laboratory Department, a group of skilled professionals who work behind the scenes—and at the bedside—to help guide diagnosis, treatment, and healing.
Led by Tiffany Witter, Phlebotomy Team Lead, the Laboratory team provides critical testing services that support nearly every area of patient care. With more than 13 years of service at Girard Medical Center, Tiffany represents a department built on experience, compassion, and trust.
“Our lab plays a major role in helping providers diagnose, monitor, and guide treatment for patients,” Tiffany shared. “Working in a rural hospital allows us to give more personalized care, and that makes a difference for the people we serve.”
The Laboratory Department offers the largest in-house testing capabilities in the area and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Services include outpatient blood and urine collection, emergency department testing, EKGs, arterial blood gases (ABGs), and rapid testing for COVID, strep, flu, and RSV. The lab also works closely with all of GMC’s outreach clinics, allowing patients to bring in orders from any provider and receive timely, convenient testing close to home.
In a rural setting, the lab team’s role extends beyond testing—it’s about reassurance, comfort, and connection. Many patients recognize familiar faces upon arrival, easing anxiety and building trust. “Our patients aren’t just patients—they’re our neighbors and friends,” Tiffany said. “They trust us with their care, and that’s something we take seriously.”
The lab team takes pride in their ability to handle challenging situations with skill and compassion, especially when patients are nervous or require extra care. Often, it’s the small moments that leave the biggest impression. “There’s nothing better than seeing a patient leave with a sense of relief, knowing they had a positive experience,” Tiffany said. “The thank-yous and smiles mean a lot to us.”
Girard Medical Center’s Laboratory Department is an essential part of what keeps rural healthcare strong—providing accurate answers, fast results, and personalized service when it matters most. GMC is proud to recognize Tiffany and the lab team as a cornerstone of care and a reflection of its commitment to the communities it serves.
