At Girard Medical Center, care is more than a service—it’s a connection to the community. As part of our Rooted in Rural commitment, we’re proud to highlight our Occupational Therapy Department, where patients are supported in regaining independence and confidence in their everyday lives.

Occupational Therapy plays a vital role across the continuum of care—from hospital stays and outpatient services to home health. The department works with patients of all ages, helping them safely return to daily routines after illness, injury, or surgery. Through personalized care, the team focuses on strengthening mobility, improving self-care skills, supporting cognitive function, and promoting long-term success at home.

For Ahsley O'Brien, OTR/L,  this work is deeply personal. Born and raised in Girard, she now serves the same community she calls home.

Ashley works closely with patients to improve their ability to perform meaningful daily tasks—whether that’s getting dressed, preparing meals, or reaching developmental milestones. She also collaborates with families and care teams to ensure each patient has the tools and support needed for a safe transition home.

“Serving a rural community means providing essential care where it’s needed most,” Ashley shares. “The relationships we build truly matter, and even small improvements can make a big difference in someone’s daily life.”

What Ashley values most is seeing patients overcome challenges and regain independence. Those moments—when patients realize what they’re capable of—are what make her work so meaningful.
