At the center of that care is Peter Bates, APRN, a Family Nurse Practitioner and Emergency Nurse Practitioner who brings both experience and compassion to every patient encounter.
A Familiar Face in Emergency Care
Peter has been part of Girard Medical Center for 12 years, with the last three years serving full-time in the Emergency Department. Originally from Galena, Kansas, he understands the importance of local care and the value of treating patients who are not just visitors—but neighbors.
In a rural setting, emergency care often extends beyond traditional definitions. Peter and the ER team treat a wide range of conditions—from urgent and life-threatening emergencies to time-sensitive health concerns that may not be able to wait for a primary care appointment.

A typical shift in the Emergency Department is anything but predictable. Peter sees patients of all ages presenting with a wide variety of concerns, working quickly to assess, diagnose, and treat each individual.
When needed, he coordinates transfers to larger medical centers for specialized care—but whenever possible, he and the team provide treatment locally, ensuring patients can stay close to home and their support systems.
What makes rural emergency care unique is its flexibility. The ER often acts as a bridge—supporting patients while they wait for specialist care or helping manage conditions when other resources are limited.

For Peter, one of the most meaningful parts of his work is the connection he builds with patients. In a small community, those relationships extend beyond the hospital walls.
He often sees former patients around town—at local events, in stores, or out enjoying the same outdoor spaces he loves. Whether he’s hunting, fishing, or camping, Peter values being part of the same community he serves.
