For Nathaniel “Nate” Jameson, RN, working at Girard Medical Center is about more than caring for patients—it’s also about serving a community deeply connected to his own family.
Nate has been part of the GMC team for eight years and works in the Senior Behavioral Health Department, where he helps care for adults aged 55 and older who are experiencing mental and behavioral health challenges associated with aging. In his role, Nate assists patients with activities that keep their minds engaged while helping them develop coping skills and better understand medication management.
“Our department helps people over the age of 55 with all sorts of changes people experience with getting older,” Nate shared.
Because progress in behavioral health often takes time, Nate wants the community to understand that a stay in Senior Behavioral Health may be longer than a typical hospital stay. Treatment plans and medications can take time to show their full benefit, and the team works closely with each patient throughout that process.
For Nate, one of the most rewarding parts of the job is seeing how that care can make a difference not only for patients, but also for their families.
“The problems our patients face are difficult for them and their families to deal with,” he said. “We are able to assist them with a plan for how to handle their mental health concerns and what outcomes they can expect.”
He also values the people beside him each day. When asked what he enjoys most about being part of the department, his answer was simple: the way his coworkers support one another.
Rooted in Family and Community
Nate grew up in Columbus, Kansas, but his connection to the Girard community runs through generations of his family.
His grandfather, Frank Jameson, was part of the Girard community and passed away before Nate was born. Working at GMC has given Nate an unexpected way to feel connected to him.
“From time to time, I get to hear stories from patients about my grandpa,” Nate said. “That is something I find special.”
That family connection is also reflected at Frank Jameson Field, named in his grandfather’s honor. Nate says he may not make it there often, but seeing his grandfather’s name on the football field remains meaningful.
“I think it is so cool to see my grandpa have a field named after him,” he shared.
His connection to GMC became personal in another way when his grandmother was a frequent patient at the hospital. Nate remembers always being pleased with the care she received—a reminder of what it means to have quality healthcare close to home.
“I think having a local hospital is great for the community,” Nate said. “Not having to drive 20 minutes to receive care is something I find value in.”
Beyond the Scrubs
Outside of work, Nate enjoys reading, playing video games, watching TV, and spending time babysitting his nieces and nephews.
And there’s one thing his coworkers and patients might not guess about him: Nate was a competitive chess player in high school and earned a medal at the state level.
When it comes to his outlook on life, Nate tries to live by the motto, “Live each day as if it is your last.” For him, that doesn’t mean being reckless—it means appreciating the people and moments that matter.
“If you appreciate something or someone, go show it,” he explained. “With my family, when it is time to leave, even if we have an argument, I always tell everyone that I love them, because that might be the last time you see them.”
That appreciation for family, community, and the people around him is something Nate carries into his work each day at Girard Medical Center.
